Lake landscape photography is another favorite of mind. The scenery around lakes and rivers is always changing based on light, weather, and other factors. Springtime is a wonderful time because the vegetation blooms beautiful flowers that add color with the water photography. These lakes and rivers also offers lovey foreground rocks and other formations which add to the photograph. Many times the wind is still and the reflections on the lake is perfect.
When planning my day for this kind of photography, I usually go out early in the morning or late in the day when the light helps enrich the colors. When the wind is very still, I always took for reflections on the lake or even a area of water new the river.. I always use my Canon 6D ii full frame camera and usually the Canon 24-70 F/2.8 lens because it covers most of what I am after. In addition, I will use the Canon 100-400 ii telephoto and the Canon 11-24 F/4 wide angle lens. Most of the time I use a tripod, however, there are times I will do handheld because there is enough light.
Reflections of the landscape is always very popular and I usually have found it is a short window of time before the winds blows. I usually position low close to the shoreline of the lake with the camera leveled. Because nothing can move, I set the mirror lock up and a 2 second delay so there is no shake in the camera at all. The wide angle lenses work very well here so I use the Canon 11-24 F/4 a lot here.
At sunset, I usually get ready about an hour before sunset and position myself to capture the composition. There are a lot of interesting lighting effects I watch for that occur with a setting sun over water.
